QUESTION:

For a high resolution large format photo print, what resolution is needed? What size can be enlarged before the image starts to break down (pixelate), ratio... from what to what?

Thank you. F.D.

ANSWER:

High quality printing requires high resolution images of 300 dpi (dot per inch) or higher.

Large format printing requires images of comparable quality, but the actual size will depend on the printer's specifications, as well as what is available as a source image. In certain cases resolution of 150-200 dpi will work.

More than one factor should be taken into consideration when resizing digital images. Different images would produce different quality results upon enlargement.

A few general rules for image enlargement:

Image quality starts to degrade upon every re-sample/re-save, as well (and even more so) as upon enlargement.

For high quality printing which starts at 300 dpi re-sample/enlargement is not recommended.

Almost every image can be enlarged slightly before it starts to "break down" and pixelation occurs.

The higher quality of the source image the more it can be enlarged with less loss of quality.

As color, contrast, saturation, sharpness of every image is different, so is the possibility to get good quality prints upon enlargement would be different. Unique qualities of each image would affect the quality of the enlarged print.

Small, poor quality images can not be resized without significant degradation to the image.

The best way to go about enlarging images is to test and see the enlarged results before printing.

Any necessary corrections can be done in Adobe Photoshop. There are ways to improve and modify the blown up image by airbrushing, painting, filtering and other processing by the program.

Sometimes some loss of quality upon enlargement is acceptable because the large format prints are usually viewed from some distance.

Thank you. A.T.
